The Chinese language contains thousands of characters, so there is no way of placing them all on a smartphone keyboard. The solution is: Pinyin transliteration!

Each time you want to type a word in Chinese, you begin typing its Pinyin transliteration (yes, you must know it!) and the keyboard algorithm pops up some Chinese "candidate" characters, from which you have to choose the correct Chinese word, phrase or symbol.
