What is the speed of sound in different materials?

The speed of sound depends on the density of the material through which the sound passes. In air under normal conditions, the speed of sound is approximately 343.3 meters per second or 1224 km/h.

In water the speed of sound is 1484 meters per second, which is more than 4 times the speed of sound in air. The warmer the water, the faster the speed of sound in it. When diving to a greater depth, the speed of sound in water also increases.

Sound travels much faster in solids than in water or air. The speed of sound in a solid body can reach up to 6,000 meters per second, which is approximately equal to 21,600 km/h.
